Abstract
481,369. Vehicle spring - suspensions. STEELE, W. N. C. Sept. 10, 1936, No. 24731. [Class 108 (ii)] In a vehicle-wheel suspension system, a wheel is carried by a stub axle assembly free to rise and fall but restrained against such movement bv a control link anchored to the chassis but pivotable with respect thereto and interposed between the stub axle assembly and a laminated spring carried by the chassis. In the independent-wheel suspension shown, the wheel-carrying member 6 is pivotally connected to parallel frames 7, 8 hinged to the chassis frame-member 9 and the assembly is connected to a laminated spring 16 mounted on the chassis member by arms 11b, 11a splined to a common spindle 12 rotatable in the chassis member. By varying the lengths of the arms 11a, 11b the relative displacements of the wheel and spring may be varied. The spring 16 may be a quarter-elliptical, cantilever, or, as shown semi-elliptical spring. In a modification the spindle 12 is mounted in a bearing bracket secured to the member 9. The wheel-carrying member 6 may incorporate a steering-wheel king-pin. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction in which the stub axle assembly is slidable vertically on a bearing on the outer end of a main axle.
