Abstract
479,639. Strainers. JONES & ATTWOOD, Ltd. Feb. 20, 1937, No. 5138. Convention date, Feb. 21, 1936. [Class 46] Solid matter intercepted by a slotted straining wall is sheared off and comminuted by a cutter bar held against the straining wall and having movement relatively thereto without entering the slots of the wall. The apparatus shown comprises a cylindrical strainer A comprising longitudinal ribs 29 connected by arcuate bars 30 which form intermediate circumferential straining slots. The ribs 29 are flush with the outer surfaces of the bars and both ribs and bars taper inwardly. The strainer is supported by webs 24 from a hub 23 fixed on a shaft 21 rotated by an electric motor 20. The strainer is arranged in a container 10, to which the sewage or other liquid under treatment is supplied, and over an aperture 16 in the base through which the strained liquid is discharged. The liquid is prevented from entering at the upper end of the strainer by an annular cover 34, which is continued upward by a cylinder 41, so that solid matter cannot settle on the cover. A pipe 36 bolted to the cover 34 surrounds the shaft 21. The inwardly tapering ribs 29 form cutting edges at the end of the slots which as the strainer rotates co-operate with the edge of a cutting bar 48 to comminute the matter intercepted by and projecting from the slots in the strainer. The bar 48 is fixed to an arm 45 suspended from the cover 34 and abutting against a fixed member 49 at the lower end. The edge of the bar 48 is notched and the edges of the notches co-operate with the cutting edges of inclined teeth 50 fixed in staggered series on the outer surfaces of the ribs 29.
