[Class 83 (iii)] A combined holder and tool for lathes &c. comprises a gripping-member 3 of U-shaped cross-section which grips the sides of the cutting -tool 1, and between the base 2 of which member and the cutting-tool are held spacing members 6 for the height.adjustment of the tool. The walls of the gripping-member may be inwardly inclined to give a better grip on the tool and a flat or curved spring spacing member 4 may be arranged in the bottom of the holder and provided with curved ends to prevent the other spacing members falling out when the tool and holder are removed from the machine : alternatively, the bottom of the holder may be arched and provided with upturned ends for this purpose. The surfaces of the gripping-member may be softened or serrated to give a better grip, or they may be coated with a soft metal such as copper or zinc for this purpose.
