Abstract

477,169. Brakes. SANTON, E. July 7, 1936, No. 18816. [Class 103 (i)] In a fluid friction brake in which a cylinder 1 has transfer ports 4 at the ends of the piston stroke, the piston 5 is coupled to the member to be braked by means of a clutch 16 engaged by a lever 18 and sliding member 19. The clutch is held disengaged by springs 17. The piston 5 may be connected to the clutch shaft 13 by a crank 10, or by an eccentric. The clutch may be spring applied and held disengaged by a lever. Bevel or spur gearing 15 may be used to connect the clutch to the main shaft 14 of the mechanism to be braked, or the gearing may be dispensed with and the two parts of the clutch mounted one on each shaft, the shafts being coaxial. The brake may be operated in conjunction with band brakes on a vehicle.
