[Class 140] [Also in Groups XXIII and XI] Apparatus for attaching veneer to work-pieces of irregular form with a heat-hardenable glue, comprising an elastic cover which is pressed on to the work by pressure fluid admitted to a hood, is provided with a worksupporting bed-plate 2 having on the underside cells each containing a heating-element 3 and heat-insulated at their bottom sides. In the construction shown, the cells are formed by depending ribs 21 on the plate, and are closed at the bottom by a plate 4 covered with a layer 5 of heatinsulating material; the elements 3 are electrically heated. The elastic cover 8 closes the bottom of a hood 7, to which it is held by springs 9. The edge of the hood rests in a groove in a ledge 6<1> extending round the plate 2, and a clamp may be provided to hold the hood in position. Air or other gas is compressed in a compressor 11 and stored in a tank 12 and, after passing through a heater 13, is admitted to the hood by a pipe 14, Fig. 4, having a conical seating in which the coned end of a connection 30 carried by the hood engages when the hood is lowered. The hood is raised by air supplied from the tank 12 to two cylinders 15, the piston-rods 17 of which engage shoulders 19 on the hood which slide on guides 18. To ensure equal movements of the pistons they are provided with racks with which engage pinions 20 secured to a shaft 21. Safety catches 24 retain the hood in the raised position. Instead of, or in addition to, heating the air externally, a heating device may be arranged in the hood. The electric heating-elements 3 may be replaced by pipes carrying superheated steam.
