Abstract
472,690. Rotary-transmission dynamometers. WHITE. W. A., and WHITING. W. R. G. March 28, 1936, No. 9290. [Class 106 (ii)] Factors corresponding to the vertical twist in a continuous power-transmitting shaft and to its speed of rotation are compounded by purely mechanical means to give a direct indication of the power transmitted at a given moment. Sprockets 3a, 3b are mounted some distance apart on the shaft 2 and drive through chain gear 4a 4b and sprockets 7a, 7b two light shafts 5a, 5b. The sprocket 7b for the shaft 5b is on a sub axle and drives the shaft 5b through a one-to-one gearing 9, 10, so that the shafts are driven at the same speed but in the opposite directions. The light shafts at their adjacent ends carry bevel wheels 10a 10b gearing with a bevel wheel 11 mounted on a spindle 12 at right angles to the common axis of the shafts 5a, 5b. The spindle 12 rotates in bearings in a long sleeve 13 provided with trunnions 14a, 14b, rotating in bearings 15a, 15b, and carries a spherical dome 16, the centre of which lies at the intersection of the axis of the spindle 12 with the axis of the shafts 5a, 5b. A friction wheel 17 in a mounting 19 bears on the dome when the shaft 2 is not under torque so that a diameter is in line with the axis of the shaft 12 and its axis in the plane of swing of the shaft 12. When torque is transmitted the wheel 12 tends to rotate around wheels 10a, 10b and swings the dome so that the wheel 17 bears on a different point and receives a rotation proportional to angle of swing of the dome as well as to the speed of the shaft 2, and a device indicating the speed of wheel 17 may be graduated in terms of power or if a counter be driven therefrom in amount of work done. As an alternative to a bevel wheel drive one cf the adjacent ends of shafts 5a, 5b may be screwed to engage a screw-threaded sleeve splined to the other shaft and movement of the sleeve used to displace a disc with which a friction wheel engages. In a modification, the spindle carrying the domed member rotates in a casing tiltable about the common axis of the two shafts which casing carries a stationary gear wheel forming part of an epicyclic gear including planets mounted on a carrier mounted in rigid relation to the third wheel. The drive from the dome takes place through two friction gears carried by a pivoted bracket, the second gear driving the counter.
