Abstract

422,577. Variable - speed gearing. ASPEREN, C. H. VAN, 314, Glenlake Avenue, Toronto, Canada. July 22, 1933, No. 20686. Convention date, July 23, 1932. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XX] Gyroscopic apparatus for generating a unidirectional pulsating torque, particularly for the transmission of energy from a driving to a driven element, consists of one or more gyroscopic bodies mounted for movement simultaneously about two axes, viz. spin and turn, intersecting at an angle greater than zero, the bodies. being such that their mass is concentrated near a plane containing the axis of spin. As shown, the two bodies 1 are rotatably mounted on trunnions 30 projecting from and at right angles to a shaft 28. The latter is mounted by bearings 15, 16 in a frame 26 and is surrounded at the lower end by a sleeve 20 carrying a bevel gear 19 engaged by bevel gears 17, 18 integral with the bodies 1. The sleeve 20 at the lower end carries a worm gear 21 engaged by a self-locking worm 22 on a spindle 24 supported in the frame 26. The shaft 28 with the trunnions 30 is turned by means of the pulley 25, whereupon the gears 17, 18, meshing with the fixed gear 19 cause the bodies 1 to spin on the trunnions 30 with half the angular velocity of the shaft 28. Each body 1 exerts about an axis 6 perpendicular to both axes of spin and turn a pulsating torque which varies between a maximum when the body 1 is parallel to and zero when perpendicular to the shaft 28. The torques which are communicated to the frame 26 have the same periods in time as their axes 6 have in space. By operation of the worm 22 the gear 19 may be moved to give a transient acceleration about the axes of spin 30 causing a change of phase of the periodic torque. A similar effect may be obtained by a transient acceleration of the shaft 28. When used for the transmission of energy the pulley 25 may be replaced by a gear wheel engaging a bevel gear coupled to the driving element and the frame 26 mounted for rotation about the axis 27 and coupled to the driven element. The transient accelerations may be effected by a member arranged along the axis 27.
