471,094. Silencing gaseous currents. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 1, 1937, No. 2894. Convention date, Feb. 1, 1936. [Class 7 (ii)] An intake silencer for the compressor of a refrigerating-machine comprises a chamber having a large volume as compared with the displacement of the compressor, and having an inlet and an outlet, with means restricting the inlet so as to maintain the velocity of the fluid flowing therethrough at a value greater than the acoustical velocity of the fluid, thereby preventing the egress of sound waves. The Figure shows a silencing-chamber 15 having an outlet 36 leading to the compressor, and an inlet 40 provided with a restricted passage of Venturi form. The chamber 15 is preferably of arcuate shape to extend around the compressor.
