Abstract
Carbon disulphide is obtained by reacting sulphur with carbon obtained by subjecting a difficultly fusible non-caking coal, preferably of low ash content, to carbonization at temperatures of 500--600 DEG C. Preferably, the carbon is subjected to a heat treatment at about 600--800 C. subsequently to the carbonization and prior to the reaction with sulphur. The reaction between sulphur and the carbon may be effected by charging the carbon into a vertical retort and passing sulphur vapour through it at 900--1000 DEG C.
