Abstract
A material for use in removing varnish is prepared by increasing the consistency of a varnish solvent, whereby its action on the varnish is slowed down. For this purpose, the solvent may be converted into a syrup, an emulsion, a gel or a paste. According to examples: (1) methyl or ethyl alcohol is saturated, in the cold, with sugar, and ammonia or other base may be added; (2) an ester, such as butyl acetate, is emulsified with paraffin; (3) a solvent, such as glycol monoethyl ether or an aliphatic ketone, is emulsified with wax, paraffin or the like, and soap or other emulsifying agent may be added; (4) a solvent is gelled by the addition of gelatin, peptin or agar-agar; (5) a paste is made by adding flour, kieselguhr, zinc white or camphor to a solvent.
