Abstract

The removal from industrial gases such as coal gas, coke oven gas, water gas, producer gas or hydrogen obtained from coal gas, of acidic gaseous constituents, such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide or sulphur dioxide, by washing under pressure with aqueous solutions of basically reacting organic nitrogen compounds, such as ethanolamines or propanol amines, is preceded by a preliminary wash with a relatively small quantity of physically acting solvents to remove traces of harmful constituents such as prussic acid, tarry fog, naphthalene, nitric oxide, and organic sulphur compounds. Organic liquids such as mineral oil or chlorinated hydrocarbons, or water or solutions of salts such as sodium or potassium chloride, are employed, usually in amount not more than half that of the main washing agent. In an example, coke oven gas is washed at 10 atmospheres pressure with a thin mineral oil and then with water before a final wash with ethanolamine solution.
