Abstract
In the process of the parent Specification for the manufacture of symmetrical diarylguanidines by the action of ammonia under pressure on diarylthioureas suspended in benzene, toluene, xylene or other organic solvents, the metallic oxides employed as desulphurizing agents are replaced by lead salts, particularly lead chloride and lead sulphate, with or without the addition of sodium carbonate. The lead salts may be regenerated from the lead sulphide formed in the reaction by treating it with hydrochloric or nitric acid. In the latter case, in addition to lead sulphate, a certain amount of lead nitrate is formed and under the conditions of the reaction is converted into lead oxide, the mixture of oxide and sulphate so formed being suitable for re-utilization. In examples: (1) thiocarbanilide suspended in benzene is treated with ammonia under 5 atmospheres pressure in the presence of a mixture of fresh or regenerated lead chloride and sodium carbonate, producing diphenylguanidine; (2) fresh or regenerated lead sulphate is employed as desulphurizing agent in the process of (1); (3) a mixture of lead chloride and sulphide from the desulphurization is treated with hydrochloric acid to regenerate lead chloride; (4) lead sulphide from the desulphurization with lead sulphate is treated with nitric acid to regenerate lead sulphate.
