Abstract

275,579. Titan Co. Aktieselskabet. Aug. 3, 1926, [Convention date]. Titanium sulphates and salts in general.-In the treatment of titaniferous materials, such as ilmenite, rutile, or titanite, with an acid, such as sulphuric acid, to effect solution, a reducing agent is added to the material to be treated or to the acid before or during the treatment, to expedite the reactions which take place. As reducing agents may be used magnetic or common pyrites, the products obtained by heating pyrites to ignition with ilmenite, iron, or iron oxide, or by heating together two or more of pyrites, magnetic pyrites, sulphur, titanium compounds, iron, or iron compounds such as iron sulphate, at temperatures between 400 and 1000‹ C. and generally at 700-800‹ C., with or without rapid cooling, as 'by immersion in water, of the products. Ilmenite subjected to a reducing process may also be used alone. Iron used may be wholly or partly replaced by zinc, aluminium, antimony, silicon, titanium, magnesium, or alkali or alkaline earth metals. Alternatively, sulphur may be admixed with the titaniferous material to be treated, or the latter may be pretreated at 700-800‹ C. with sulphur vapour or a gas mixture containing sulphur to introduce sulphur thereinto. Additionally sulphuretted hydrogen may be added during the process of solution.
