Abstract
1 - Halogen - 2 - nitrobenzene - 4 - alkylsulphones are condensed with primary amines of the benzene series, whereby diphenylamine derivatives useful for colouring lacquers or dyeing acetate artificial silk in yellow to orange shades are obtained. Examples are given in which (1) 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-methylsulphone and aniline (or 4-methoxyaniline) yield 2-nitro-(or 4<1>-methoxy-2-nitro-)diphenylamine-4-methylsulphone; (2) 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-ethyl-(or butyl-)sulphone and aniline yield 2-nitrodiphenylamine-4-ethyl- (or butyl-) sulphone; (3) 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-ethylsulphone and 4-aminophenol yield 4<1>-hydroxy - 2 - nitrodiphenylamine - 4 - ethylsulphone; (4) 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-propylsulphone and p-toluidine yield 4<1>-methyl-2-nitrodiphenylamine-4-propylsulphone. The specified 1-halogen-2-nitrobenzene-4-alkylsulphones are obtainable from 1-chlorobenzene-4-sulphochloride (a) by reducing this to 4-chlorothiophenol, alkylating the latter, oxidizing the thioether to the sulphone, and finally nitrating, or (b) by reducing the sulphochloride to 1-chlorobenzene-4-sulphinic acid, alkylating the latter, and finally nitrating.
