Abstract

Condensation products stated to have wetting, cleansing, softening, foaming, waterproofing, sizing and emulsifying properties are obtained by treating amides of aliphatic carboxylic acids having at least eight carbon atoms with polymeric formaldehyde and sulphurous acid in the presence of tertiary amines. The nitrogen of the amide group must carry at least one hydrogen atom, but the other hydrogen atom may be replaced by alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl radicles. The products may be used in the textile, leather and paper industries, alone or in conjunction with soaps, turkey red oils, higher alcohol sulphuric esters, true sulphonic acids, glue, gum arabic, organic solvents, Glauber's salt, magnesium sulphate, sodium acetate and oxidizing bleaching agents. In examples: (1) sulphur dioxide is led into a heated mixture of paraformaldehyde, pyridine and oleic or lauric acid amide or palmitic acid methylamide; (2) sulphur dioxide is led into a heated mixture of paraformaldehyde, triethylamine and lauric acid amide. Amides derived from fatty acids obtained by the oxidation of paraffin wax, wax alcohols, mineral oils, hydrogenated coal or tar and halogenated derivatives thereof are mentioned as well as amides of montan wax acids. The condensation may be effected in the presence of diluents, solvents and electrolytes. Examples of the latter are alkaline and acid reacting agents and hydrogen peroxide.ALSO:Condensation products stated to have emulsifying properties are obtained by treating amides of aliphatic carboxylic acids having at least eight carbon atoms with polymeric formaldehyde and sulphurous acid in the presence of tertiary amines.
