Abstract
The invention comprises molybdic xanthates having the general formula: <FORM:0789383/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents an alkyl radical having at least 6 carbon atoms, preferably 6 to 12 carbon atoms, and their manufacture comprising reacting an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium molybdate with an alkali metal xanthate derived from an alkanol having at least 6 carbon atoms, acidifying the solution with acetic acid to a pH of 4 and extracting the precipitated molybdic xanthate with a volatile hydrocarbon, the operations being effected at a temperature of about 0 DEG C. The resulting hydrocarbon solution is dried and then the solvent removed by heating under reduced pressure to isolate the xanthate. Examples describe the preparation of molybdic decyl-, dodecyl- and hexyl-xanthates. The compounds are used in lubricants (see Group III). Specifications 765,507 and 773,820, [Group III], are referred to.ALSO:Lubricants for metals consist of a mineral lubricating oil containing a molybdic xanthate having the general formula: <FORM:0789383/III/1> where R represents and alkyl radical containing 6 or more carbon atoms, in an amount of from 0.5 to 6 per cent by weight or, in the case of a lubricant for use in lubricating metal parts subjected to friction under progressively increasing pressures, from 0.5 to 10 per cent. In use, the xanthates are decomposed by the frictional heat and molybdenum sulphide is deposited on the metal surface. A preformed coating of molybdenum sulphide may be formed on metal parts to be subjected to friction by heating the metal parts in a mineral oil solution containing from 0.5 to 10 per cent by weight of the above defined xanthate at a temperature above the decomposition temperature of the xanthate. The so-coated metal parts may be continuously lubricated in use by means of a mineral lubricating oil containing 0.5 to 6 per cent of the defined molybdic xanthate or of molybdenum blue or by means of a mixture of 0.5 to 6 per cent of a thiomolybdate of a nitrogeneous base with a glycol, a polyethylene glycol, a polypropylene glycol, a vegetable or animal oil, fatty acid esters admixed with primary alcohols, fatty acid esters of mono- or polyhydric alcohols or monohydric alcohol esters of di-acids. Molybdic hexyl, decyl and dodecyl xanthates are mentioned. The preparation of the xanthates is described (see Group IV (b)). Specifications 765,507 and 773,820 are referred to.
