Abstract

In aqueous oil emulsions suitable for use as lubricants the proportion of oil present is reduced by the addition of a small amount of a nitrite, e.g. sodium nitrite, for example 0,5 to 0,025 per cent of the water content of the emulsion, and the amount of oil can then be reduced to about 1 per cent. Such emulsions may be used for the treatment of cast iron or malleable iron, and are stated to prevent the formation of rust: they may also be used as cooling means for internal-combustion engines.
