Abstract
461,851. Converting. ALLGEMEINE ELEKTRICITATS-GES. APRIL 20, 1936, No. 11323. Convention date, April 18, 1935. [Class 38 (ii)] Relates to converters of the Marx type in which an auxiliary arc is blown between the electrodes, the starting circuit comprising a circuit for striking and a circuit for feeding the auxiliary arc and consists in coupling the striking and feeding circuits by means of a valve preferably a vapour discharge device to avoid faulty excitation of the main gap. The arc in an auxiliary gap K2 is struck by means of a transformer T2 which gives preferably a peaky potential and is maintained by means of a transformer T1 which is connected to the gap through a valve V. The valve V prevents the negative half cycle of voltage of the transformer T1 from being applied to the discharge gap K2 and also short-circuits the negative half cycle of voltage of the transformer T2. A condenser C in series with a resistance K3 is connected in the maintaining circuit to enable the arc to be supplied immediately it is struck. In a modification, means are provided for varying the voltage of the transformer T1, T2 in response to a change in the breakdown voltage of the discharge gap.
