[Class 39 (i)] A spark-gap having at least one toothed rotary electrode of which the teeth perform two breaks for each half-period is coupled to an oscillatory circuit, and the distances between the teeth, or the widths of the teeth or both are unequal and are such that the charging current of the condenser in parallel with the arc has a constant absolute value each time the voltage is zero. In one form, Fig. 1, the gap comprises a movable or fixed electrode 5, and a rotary electrode 1 with teeth 21, 2<2>. The electrodes are driven by a synchronous motor 4<1>. The arc may be quenched by air from a pipe 8 so arranged as to deliver its jet along the line of the arc at the moment of extinction. The angular distances a between the teeth and the angular widths b of the teeth are unequal, the teeth being arranged in two sets of four, 21, 2<2>... , and 2<a>, 2<b> ... , one set for each half-period. The gap may be connected across a condenser in series with an inductance which may be a furnace winding. Curves showing the manner in which the values of a and b can be calculated are given. The values of b should be such that the condenser is completely discharged at each break.
