Abstract
In the process described in the parent Specification, boric acid, or its anhydride, and hydrofluoric acid, both of which may advantageously be in the anhydrous state, are added to the reaction mixture instead of previously formed boron trifluoride. In examples, acetylene is passed into (1) acetic acid and (2) butyric acid, to which have been added mercuric oxide, boric anhydride and hydrofluoric acid. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of (I) vinyl acetate, produced by passing acetylene into acetic acid to which has been added mercuric oxide, boric acid and aqueous hydrofluoric acid; (II) vinyl formate, prepared by passing acetylene into formic acid to which has been added mercuric oxide, boric acid and anhydrous hydrofluoric acid. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also specifies propionic acid, crotonic acid and methoxyacetic acid as starting materials. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
