Abstract
Fatty acids of high melting point are manufactured from waste fatty substances, i.e. fatty substances of high free fatty acid content, by esterifying the free fatty acids therein with mono- or dihydric alcohols, and then hydrogenating the ester mixture obtained, the saturated acids being finally obtained by subsequent splitting. The mono- or dihydric alcohols specified comprise methanol, ethyl alcohol and glycol. The ester mixture may be purified before hydrogenating and also after hydrogenating by the usual methods, such as with fuller's earth. The fatty acids may be esterified by the process of Specification 642,718, [Group IV (b)], using camphorsulphonic acid as the esterification catalyst.
