Abstract

Hops, lupulin or lupulin-free hops, are extracted in two stages with (1) a low boiling solvent such as ethyl or petroleum ether or methylene dichloride followed by water or alcohol-water mixture, or (2) for old hops, by a higher boiling solvent such as ethyl alcohol, trichlorethylene, or ethylene dichloride followed by water or alcohol-water mixture, or (3) by a mixture of the above two types of organic solvents followed by water or alcohol-water mixture. During distillation of the low boiling solvent extract, the hop oils remain in the extract together with the resins, while with the higher boiling solvent they pass over in the distillate from which they may be recovered. The water extract contains the tannin, and to improve its keeping qualities may be mixed or emulsified with 3 to 5 per cent of alcohol. The various extracts may be mixed in any proportion as desired.
