Abstract
<PICT:0477955/III/1> A process of high vacuum distillation for liquids such as fish oils consists in moving the liquid condensate in cocurrent with the distillate vapours, and then in countercurrent in a conduit protected from the vapours before being again exposed to the vapours. Apparatus suitable for the purpose comprises a series of baffle plates 2 in a column 1, each provided with a central aperture 2<1> turned at the edge to form gutters 3. Between the plates 2 are arranged smaller plates 5 provided with central apertures 6 masked by plates 7 supported a short distance above them. The outer edges of the plates 5 are turned to form gutters 10, which are connected by conduits 9 to the tops of the plates 2, while the gutters 3 are connected by conduits 8 to the tops of the plates 5. The ascending vapours pass through the holes 2<1> in plates 2 and turning outwards towards the column 1 sweep liquid condensate on the plates 2 towards holes 4, through which it passes to the undersides of the plates, where it is swept by the vapours moving inwards into gutters 3, giving up some of its volatile constituents to the vapours. The liquid passes down conduits 8 in countercurrent to the vapours on to the plates 5, where the inward flowing vapours sweep it towards the holes 6 through which it passes on to the undersides of the plates, where it is swept towards the gutters 10 by the outward flowing vapours, yielding some volatile constituents to the vapours. The liquid flows from gutters 10 down conduits 9 in countercurrent to the vapours on to the plates 2, where the process described above takes place again.
