Abstract
In the production of chemically resistant oil paints, preponderant proportions of finely milled silicon carbide are incorporated with the usual pigments such as minium, litharge, white lead, iron oxide and zinc oxide. 85 parts of silicon carbide with 15 parts of litharge or minium, and 85--75 parts of silicon carbide with 15--25 parts of white lead, are given as examples. The silicon carbide acts both as a pigment and also as an agent resistant to chemical action. Tatanium oxide may be added, and the rust-preventive action of the paint may be increased by adding to the silicon carbide small quantities of the known rust-preventing chromium pigments.
