Abstract
Protective coatings are formed on ferrous surfaces by treating the metal with phosphoric acid, allowing the acid to dry on the surface and form a phosphate therewith and then coating the surface with a primer paint containing a pigment which reacts with any residual phosphoric acid. The paint may be red iron oxide 36.5 parts, linseed oil 23 parts, benzole 6 parts, white spirit 30 parts and synthetic resin 4.5 parts, the resin being a mixture of acrylic and phenolformaldehyde types.ALSO:Protective coatings are formed on ferrous surfaces by treating the metal with phosphoric acid, allowing the acid to dry on the surface and form a phosphate therewith, and then coating the surface with a primer paint containing a pigment, e.g. red iron oxide, which reacts with any residual phosphoric acid. A 40-50 per cent. (by weight) solution of acid may be applied by brushing or a 12-18 per cent. (weight/volume) solution by immersion.
