[Class 74 (ii)] To minimize the formation of streaks or bands in knitted stockings of real silk, and, at the same time to preserve uniformity of loop, a main thread 7D is knitted to all the courses together with one of a number of auxiliary threads 2A, 3B, 4C. The same auxiliary thread is not knitted into any two successive courses. When knitted upon a straight-bar machine, the main thread knitted into every course ensures a better selvedge than is obtained by the three-thread carrier method. The main thread 7D and an auxiliary thread may be fed simultaneously to the needles so that the threads appear promiscuously at the front of the fabric ; alternatively, either the main or an auxiliary thread carrier may be traversed first so that the main or the auxiliary thread appears consistently at the front of the fabric. In knitting a stocking blank, the welt 10 is knitted with a stouter thread such as cotton, and the main panel 12 is knitted in the above manner as far as the top of the heel splicing at 13. At the line 13, the splicing 14, 14<1> for the heel and foot bottom is begun. The splicing thread may be fed for three courses so as to miss five or six needles and so to form a line 15 of local weakness for subsequent cutting so that the blank can be run on to the needles of a heeling machine by which the heel tabs are knitted.
