Abstract
456,915. Supply systems for discharge lamps. IBUKA, M., 32, Kitami Seijo, Kinuta-mura, Kitatama, Tokio. June 15, 1935, No. 17319. [Class 38 (iv)] [See also Groups XL and XVIII] Discharge lamps for beacons, advertising, &c. are supplied from an oscillator of periodicallyvarying frequency above audio frequencies to produce periodic growth and shortening of the glow discharge along the tubular lamp and means are provided to reduce the potential relatively to earth of each electrode alternately so that the glow spreads from alternate ends of the tube. The oscillator 7 may be connected to a remote lamp 18 through a step-down transformer 14, an earthed feeder-line 17 and a step-up transformer 16 and its frequency is periodically controlled by a motor-driven condenser 11. Unless the two electrodes of the lamp are at the same potential relatively to earth, the glow travels from one electrode to the other. The glow is made to spread alternately from opposite end by connecting the electrodes to plates 21, 22 separated by an earthed plate 23 moved alternately towards the plates 21, 22. In modifications, the electrodes are connected to a potentiometer with an earthed movable tapping or to two variable condensers alternately connected to earth. Dimensions of a tube supplied at a frequency of about 120 kilocycles are specified.
