455,419. Vehicle couplings and draught appliances. BARRES DU MOLARD, R. A. DE, Savigneux, Ain, and DURAND, L. M., 50, Rue Centrale, Lyons, both in France. Feb. 19, 1936, Nos. 5028 and 5029. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1935 and July 25, 1935. [Classes 103 (v) and 108 (ii)] In a ball-and-socket coupling device for connecting a tractor vehicle or a harnessed horse to a trailer vehicle, gun-carriage, &c., and of the kind in which the socket is formed of two parts 31, 32 housed in a tube 33, one part 31 being fixed and the other part 32 being slidable against the action of a spring 36, manually operable means are provided for displacing the movable part whereby the ball 4 may be readily engaged or disengaged, e.g. by a rider on a horse. In the construction shown, which is suitable for connecting tractor and trailer vehicles, the movement of the part 32 is effected bv means of a cam 39 mounted on a rotatable shaft 40 which is fitted with hand lever 41. The coupling-rod 34 on the trailer vehicle preferably swivels within an end-ring 38 in the tube 33 so as to permit free tilting movement of the trailer in passing over uneven ground. In a modification design. ed for use with a mounted horse, one end of the spring 36 abuts against a'slidable stop or piston to which is secured a knob projecting through and working in a double bayonet slot in the casing 33.
