Abstract
477,180. Tractor - trailer couplings. SCAMMELL, A. G., NORTH, A. D., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd. Aug. 28, 1936, No. 23664. [Class 103 (v)] A tractor - trailer coupling comprises on the tractor a hook 1 adapted to be engaged by a link 42 on the trailer and pivoted on a bolt 6 in a bracket 7, a lever 16 pivoted on the bracket 7 having its forward end in the form of a hook 15, for engaging and locking a projection 14 on the hook 1, while its rear end is connected by a link 19 to a pivoted operating lever 24 associated with a cable 28 and hand-lever 27, under the control of the driver, and a spring-controlled pivoted plate 33 which permits engagement of the link 42 with the hook 1, but snaps back into a position to prevent accidental disengagement. When the driver operates the lever 27, the locking catch 16 is rotated against the action of springs 21, and allows the hook 1 to pivot downwardly so as to free the link 42. Downward movement of the hook is limited by a rubber stop 29 secured to an inclined plate 31. Preferably the tractor is equipped with a winch and hauling cable by which the trailer may, when occasion arises, be drawn up to the tractor with the link 42 in a suitable position to couple with the hook 1. The bracket 7 is preferably resiliently supported on the tractor by means of a transverse leaf spring 9 clamped between the bracket and a flat plate 11.
