Abstract
453,342. Pedal attachments for tandem bicycles. NEWELL, C. A., 52, Hardy Road, Blackheath, London. April 16, 1936, No. 10990. [Class 136 (ii)] A pedal attachment, adapted to be mounted on an ordinary tandem bicycle to enable the rear pedals to be used by a child or short person, comprises on each side a coupling rod mechanism connecting the front and rear cranks and co-operating in such a way with a rear pedal, which is mounted on the rear crank in place of the usual pedal, that the rear pedal revolves about a virtual axis located above the real axis of the rear crank. A dummy pedal is mounted on each rear pedal spindle, and has fixed to it a vertical arm or support k on which is mounted an ordinary pedal e adapted to revolve about a virtual axis o above the real axis of the rear crank c. A coupling rod l is connected to the rear crank c, as through a parallel-motion linkwork r, and to the front crank b, as by pivoting it to a short arm n, Fig. 8, fixed to the front pedal d. In order to accommodate slight irregularities in the usual chain transmission &c., and to enable the riders to carry out " ankling " movements, means may be provided to allow a limited relative displacement between the front and rear cranks. For this purpose, the coupling rod l may be telescopic, or a slotted or a linkwork connection may be provided between the coupling rod and the front pedal. The coupling rod may be in one piece with the arm or support k.
