[Class 36] [See also Group XXXIX] In a transportable pupinised communication cable installation the coil spacing is made equal to the lengths into which the cable is divided for laying purposes, i.e. about 250 metres. The pupin coils are preferably arranged at the ends of the cable lengths and may be divided into sub-unit coils which are distributed over the ends of each length, the coils or sub-unit coils being mounted either in the conical end portions of the cable lengths or in the junction sleeves by which the conical end portions of adjacent cable lengths are connected together. The Figure shows a sub-unit coil 3 inserted in a pocket 2 formed in the conical end portion 1 of a cable length, the sub-unit coil 3, together with a similar sub-unit coil contained in the end of the adjacent cable length, forming the total loading for the cores 5 of one cable length. The coil 3 may be retained by a plug 6, or it may be vulcanized in position. Equalizing elements, such as condensers, may be accommodated in pockets formed in the conical end portions of the cable lengths.
