[Class 16] [See also Group XVI] In a manifolding book, pad, or the like the carbon sheet a<1> is an integral extension of the back cover a of the book, is adapted to fold over the sheets of the book, and has carbon ink or the like applied to its rear face. The carbon sheet may be formed of dense or tough paper, such as brown paper, or a sheet of paper printed with carbon ink may be secured to the extension a<1> of the cover. The carbon ink may be applied in determined positions only. For triplicating, the ink may be applied on both faces of the carbon sheet, in which case some of the leaves may be transparent. The carbon sheet may fold about the outer side, top, or bottom of the book. In a further modification, the carbon sheet may form a separate sheet bound or otherwise connected to the writing sheets. The carbon sheet serves also as a writing support when in use. If desired, an interleaf d resistant to a deposit of carbon from the carbon sheet may be bound in the book, and the carbon sheet when not in use is inserted between the leaf d and the front cover a<2>. Where the carbon sheet is coated on one side only, that side is left matted, and the other side is calendered or finished with a smooth surface.
