Abstract
450,265. Launching aircraft. SALMON, P., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. March 7, 1935, No. 7125. [Classes 4 and 113 (ii)] Means for launching aircraft comprise a closable dock at one end of a boat or craft into which the aircraft can be floated, a catapult on the craft and means for causing the aircraft to engage with a launching guide or truck of the catapult while floating in the dock. In one form, a barge 1 comprises a dock 2 having dock gates 3. Guide rails 4 extend throughout the length of the barge which is trimmed by ballast tanks 5 to a flying-boat to be hauled on to the launching-track of the catapult. The catapult comprises a chain 7 operated by compressed-air engines 11 and the aircraft is guided by the rails 4. In a modification, the catapult is of the multi-ram type and includes a cable system for retarding the truck and cable. In a further modification, the aircraft is lifted on to the catapult by means of a cradle connected to the barge by parallel links and raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram.
