[Class 103 (i)] A detachable friction facing for brake blocks particularly for rail vehicles comprises a rigid metal strip of uniform cross - section throughout its length and having its ends shaped by bending to engage the holder, the bent ends transmitting the whole of the braking stress to the holder. In Fig. 1, the holder a has pockets c to receive the bent ends of the friction facing b, a wall of one pocket being formed by a removable wedge d by which the facing is secured. In Fig. 4, the ends of the facing are cranked and the pockets c are open on one or both sides and the facing b is held against lateral movement by a wedge pin f or by a wedge driven laterally between the outer face of the end of the facing and the adjacent part of the pocket or by a screw passing horizontally through the end of the pocket and engaging the end of the facing. The facing may also have a central and longitudinal rib engaging a corresponding recess in the holder or two webs embracing the holder to prevent lateral movement of the facing thereon. In Fig. 9, the ends of the facing are bent at right angles to engage the holder and held by a screw m or the ends of the facing may be bent to semi-cylindrical form to fit correspondingly shaped ends of the holder. A projection or recess r may be provided on the holder, to indicate by its distance from the wheel rim when the brake is applied when a new facing is required.
