[Class 51 (i)] The base 5 and flash wall 7 of a furnace burning liquid, gaseous, or pulverulent fuel is formed of courses of imperforate firebrick units 6 each having a channel 8 on its underside and grooves 9 and 10 on its side faces leading from the channel 8 to the upper surface of the unit. The grooves of adjacent units correspond to form air ducts 11. The outer grooves 9 are inclined to the vertical so that the air currents passing upwardly through the ducts 11 of adjacent units intersect.
