[Class 4] A flying machine comprises a body B propelled by one or more pairs of laterally disposed propellers F rotating about vertical axes and so arranged that each blade is shielded during one half of its revolution by entry into a semicircular cell a formed laterally in the body. Body B is cambered at its upper side and side surfaces and has a plane underside designed to give aerodynamic support. Alternatively this surface may also be cambered. The blades of propellers F are adjustable in incidence so that they may be set before flight to give lift as well as thrust; they may also be adjustable during flight. Whilst opposed pairs of propellers are always arranged to rotate in opposite senses in the same plane, they may be arranged otherwise than as shown, e.g. superimposed pairs of propellers may be used or the propellers may be arranged at the mid-depth of the body or even above. Propellers F are driven from a single engine D, Fig. 3, which also drives a tractor airscrew C. The body B may taper in width at front and rear and the cells a may have outwardly projecting air shields d.
