Abstract

383,637. Tailless aeroplanes. SOLDENHOFF, A., 19, M³hlebachstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland. May 21, 1931, No. 14972. Convention date, May 22, 1930. [Class 4.] An arrow-shaped tailless aeroplane comprises a thick main wing a, Fig. 6, and a number of thin outer wings such as c, d, superposed and spaced on either side of the main wing giving the craft the appearance of a multiplane aeroplane at the tips. The main wing or body a may be provided with tunnels or subdivided centrally to accommodate the driving apparatus M or to provide free flow of the air therethrough to or from the airscrews. Wing a may be either of constant depth or increase in depth from the plane of symmetry outwards, and the aerofoil section may vary along the span. The outer wings c, d, which may differ in section from one another, continue the upper and lower surface camber of wing a and may either be formed at their roots to have a section geometrically similar to the end section of wing a or differing therefrom. The wings c, d may be spaced apart at their roots as shown in Fig. 9 or may be formed by directly dividing from the main wing as shown in Fig. 3. The longerons follow the lines L-L, Fig. 6, and the loads carried by the craft are distributed along these lines bringing the centre of gravity near the trailing edge of the section at the plane of symmetry. More than two thin wings may be used at each side of the main body.
