Abstract

The elongation of the electric conductor of an harpoon line is the same as that of the rope in which the conductor is encased. The conductor comprises a square rubber core encased in a fabric sleeve, wires wound round the sleeve with a short pitch twist, and a rubber jacket. When the conductor is under tension the rubber core is compressed by the wire coils. In a modification the conductor comprises wires and rubber threads twisted together, and encased in a rubber sleeve. In another modification steel wires are wound round a hemp core. The wires are encased in a rubber sleeve and a rope made up of two layers of hemp cord, or layer of sisal cord and four layers of hemp yarn. Three such lines are twisted together with a twist opposite in sense to that of the hemp core and steel wires. In another modification three steel wire strands with a right twist are twisted together with a left twist around a jute core. The spaces between the rope are filled with jute. In a further modification three ropes are twisted together each rope consisting of three steel wire ropes. The steel ropes comprise three sub-cords each of which is formed of three steel wires.
