Abstract
474,054. Combined conductor and wire rope. WELLS, W. T. April 24, 1936, No. 11776. [Class 36] A combined conductor and wire rope, particularly for supporting and supplying current to electric tools in an oil well, comprises a conductor 2 having an insulating coating 4, such as rubber, surrounded by one or more layers of cotton braid or other fabrics, and embedded in a layer of plastic moistureproof material, such as an alkyd resin, over which is applied an outer load supporting sheath 8 composed of a plurality of stranded wires 8b. The wires of the sheath are applied tightly so as to force the plastic material into the fabric 6 and preferably also into the spaces between the wires 8b. The conductor may comprise a core 1 around which a plurality of stranded wires 2b are loosely stranded with the same direction of lay as the sheath wires 8b, but with a much shorter pitch. The direction of lay of the individual strands 2a, 8a of the conductor and sheath wires is opposite to the direction of lay of the stranded wires themselves. A cotton wrapping 3 may be applied immediately over the conductor and a paper strip 5 may be wound over the insulating coating 4. The rope may be made on a stranding machine but provided with means for passing the insulated conductor with its fabric covering first through a bath containing the plastic waterproof material and then to the centre of the die in which the wires of the outer sheath are stranded.
