[Class 35] Field current pulsations in a series motor energized through a rectifier, particularly in the case where the supply has a low number of phases, are diminished by connecting an auxiliary vapour or gas discharge path in parallel with the field winding. In the form shown, the rectifier 6, preferably arranged for grid control, feeds the motor and has an additional anode to provide a discharge gap in parallel with the field winding 3. In a modification, the winding is in parallel with a gas discharge tube, preferably grid controlled, separate from the rectifier 6.
