Abstract
431,727. Vehicle spring-suspensions. COTTERILL, J. H., 167, Park Grove, Barnsley, Yorkshire. March 5, 1934, No. 6997. [Class 108 (ii)] In a vehicle spring-suspension in which each wheel is carried by a pair of transverse links, the latter are coupled at the inner end to a common member which is situated in the same vertical plane and is pivotally mounted in the chassis so that the links may also swing horizontally. The upper links i, j and the lower link p are pivoted about pins k, m, mounted on the ends of the inner intermediate member h which is rotatably mounted in bearings f, g in fork members d, e, of the chassis cross member a. The outer ends of the links are also pivoted at s, u to the outer intermediate member r about which the stub axle or wheel carrier is pivoted. A third link a<3> is universally mounted on the ends of inner and outer radius arms d<3>, b<3>, one pivoted to the chassis on an axis coincident with the axis of the member h and the other carried by the wheel carrier. In the case of the steering wheels the members h, r are inclined in the longitudinal and lateral directions to give the requisite " caster " and " camber " to the wheel and the inner radius rod d<3> is provided with a steering arm h<3> and a rigid extension f for universal connection to a track rod g<3> similarly connected to the radius rod of the opposite co-axial wheel. The links are set forwardly so that their maximum rearward deflection brings them into a plane at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the vehicle. Vertical suspension is controlled by a spring v carried by a tension rod a<1> pivoted to the upper links i, j and abutting against a bracket w carried by the member h, while the horizontal movement is resisted by a similar spring g<1> carried by a tension rod a<1> abutting against a plate h<1> carried by the chassis. Abutment resilient stops e<1>, f<1>, t<1>, u<1> are provided for the springs.
