Abstract

432,157. Vehicle spring-suspensions. GIRLING, A. H. G., 24, Sherard Road, Eltham, London. Oct. 24, 1934, No. 30507. [Class 108 (ii)] Relates to independent wheel suspensions for motor, &c. vehicles of the kind in which the movements of the wheel-carrying bracket C are controlled by upper and lower transverse links F, G pivoted at their inner ends on the chassis, in combination with a longitudinal arm or torque rod D also pivoted to the chassis at a point E. In order to provide the necessary flexibility or freedom of movement of the links and wheel-carrier the joints between the links F, G and the wheel-carrier and chassis and between the rods D and the chassis A are of a rubberbushed or universal type, while, as shown in Fig. 3, the axes of the pivots between the links F, G and the carrier C pass substantially through the pivotal axis of the joint E between the arm D and the chassis. In addition, the upper and shorter link F is disposed nearer to the axis E than the lower link G, preferably being to the rear of the road wheel axles while the link G is forward thereof, the carrier C consequently being inclined to the vertical. For adjustment purposes the link F may be made in two parts F<2>, F3, Fig. 7, screwed together for varying the length of the link. The springs J, which are preferably of helical form but may be laminar, are disposed between seatings J<1>, J<2>, Fig. 4 on the link G and on chassis bracket H respectively, these seatings being somewhat inclined to each other under normal loading, and adapted to assume a parallel relation under heavier loading. At their inner ends the links G are supported by means of ball-joints K in a housing K<4>, to the centre L of which is also pivoted a central arm P of the steering mechanism, while wedge-shaped blocks of rubber M are mounted on the chassis to limit the upward movement of the links G. In substitution for the joints with rubber bushings the links may be pivoted directly to brackets which are mounted with interposed rubber pads on the chassis or other support. The invention may be applied to the rear wheels in addition to the front steering- wheels.
