Abstract
Oxazine dyes which dye silk or a cellulose ester or cellulose ether artificial silk in blue or black shades are prepared by condensing together in an aqueous lower alcohol medium containing at least 30 per cent by weight of water, the hydrochloride or other suitable salt of a nitrosodialkylaniline with 1,5-dioxynaphthalene. It is stated that using as reaction medium methyl or ethyl alcohol alone, the desired dyes are not obtained. Catalysts which may be present during the reaction are manganese dioxide, iron filings, zinc dust, boric acid or sodium acetate. In examples nitrosodimethylaniline is reacted with 1,5-dioxynaphthalene in aqueous alcohol in presence of manganese dioxide to give a blue dye; by increasing the proportion of the nitroso body brown or black dyes may be obtained.
