[Class 40 (iii)] In a light-valve using the direct electro-optical doublerefraction of solid crystals, a plurality of small crystals g, ground to the same thickness and provided with thin metallic electrodes, are arranged in parallel in the path of rays from an objective lens b. The electrodes consist of metallic foil placed on a conducting layer of metal provided on the crystals by cathodic disintegration. The arrangement prevents detrimental light from the sides. The prisms of the polariser f and analyser h consist of a number of small crystals. Detrimental ultra-violet rays are eliminated and the colour of the reproduced picture corrected by a filter d.
