Abstract
445,106. Electro-optical light-valves. PULVERMACHER, K. PULVARI-, 2, Parisiutca, Budapest. Oct. 1, 1934, No. 28097. Convention date, April 28. Addition to 442,381. [Classes 39 (i) and 40 (iii)] Relates to an arrangement for influencing a beam of polarized light by electrical means as claimed in the parent Specification, in which, provided in the path of the light rays is a medium which rotates the plane of polarization of the light passing through it under the influence of an electric field and which is irradiated by an electron beam in order to apply a modulating voltage thereto. According to the invention, a body of insulating material and /or (1) a grating consisting of linear conductors electrically insulated from one another individually or in groups or (2) a slot-shaped screen is or are provided between the source of the electron beam and the electro-optically active medium. This medium may consist of one or more crystals, a liquid, or a screen or screens each built up from a plurality of crystal elements or amorphous particles. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement similar to that described with reference to Fig. 1 of the parent Specification, but in which the crystal 6, e.g. of zinc sulphide, is disposed on the outside wall of the tube 5 or at a slight separation therefrom. Anarrangement is also described (Fig. 2, not shown) employing an electro-optically active screen, which is similar to that described with reference to Fig. 2 of the parent Specification, but in which the screen lies directly against the outer obliquely flattened wall of the tube. Fig. 3 shows a further arrangement which may be used for wireless picture transmission in which a grating 49 formed from electrical conductors is provided at the inner wall 47 of the tube 5, the individual lines of this grating being insulated from one another individually or in groups. The optically active medium 6 is shown as comprising a plurality of crystals fitted together. When it is desired to transmit a plurality of lines simultaneously two or more gratings may be provided one behind the other, the gratings being encountered individually by different electron beams and a crystal or screen being associated with each line. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a construction in which a glass &c. vessel containing a liquid such as nitrobenzol is arranged inside the tube, a grating similar to the grating 49, Fig. 3, being arranged on the side of the vessel which faces the cathode. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
