[Class 112] Lock-stitching by hooks.- In a lock-stitch sewing- machine having a straight barbed needle and a rotating hook, the hook is rotated at a non-uniform speed by a crank drive so that it is clear of the needle when this is making its downward stroke. The main shaft a of the machine carries a crank b which swings a triangular lever e about a pivot d on an arm g journalled at f to the machine. At the comer h, the lever e is connected by a link i by universal joints to the crank l which actuates the hook shaft m. This arrangement causes the hook n to turn quickly for its thread lifting movement, but to remain almost at rest while the needle passes in front of it. The needle bar p and loop spreader q are mounted on a support r and can be readily moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, clear of the hook, for replacing the spool.
