[Class 126] In a firegrate of the type provided with a rake having teeth 15<a> projecting up between the bars and adapted to be reciprocated by a forwardly-projecting handle 15<b>, the teeth 15<a> are elongated and the rake is supported solely by bearing means at the front of the grate, on which bearing the handle rests, so that the rake may be swivelled in a vertical plane about the bearing as well as reciprocated upon it. In the construction shown, the rake, when in the out-of-use position shown in full lines is supported on a ledge 16 and by contact of the handle with the upper edge of an aperture in the front plate 17 through which it passes. In use, the rake is tilted until the fingers 15<a> project up through the grate bars and reciprocated, taking its bearing on the ledge 16 or the lower edge of the opening in the front plate 17. An adjustable front bar 9 is provided, which during raking is supported in the inclined position shown in Fig. 2 in broken lines to provide a gap for the discharge of ashes behind the front casing 17 to the ash-box, and which may also be supported in a horizontal position to provide an opening for lighting the fire, lugs on the frame being provided for retaining it in either position.
