Abstract

Grates.-The grate of a barless fire-place is hinged at or near its front edge, or is fitted so that it may be slid forwards, in order to facilitate the removal of the ashes to a pan in front of or beneath the grate. Fig. 3 shows a grate B normally supported by lugs D, the lower ends of which have open slots engaging with pins or trunnions E on the sides of the fire-place. The rear edge of the grate is supported by the rear part C of a ledge which extends round the sides and back of the fireplace, and which supports also a metal frame consisting of a front bar f and two rearwardlyextending parallel bars f<1>. The grate B may be lifted from the trunnions E, and drawn forwards, the lugs D resting on the hearth and the rear edge of the grate on the bar f; the ashes may then be pushed over the rear edge into an ashpan &c.
