[Class 97 (i)] An electric light fitting for illuminating a polished surface to be examined for imperfections, comprises a surface, consisting of alternate light and dark bands, arranged to be substantially evenly illuminated by one or more electric lamps. The bands can be produced by painting strips on an opal diffusing surface, but are preferably obtained by supporting a grid in front of the opal glass in such a way that it can readily be removed and replaced by another.
