Abstract

414,630. Mercury-vapour apparatus. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., 28, Kingsway, London. May 29, 1934, No. 15994. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1933. [Class 39 (i).] The arc to the mercury cathode of a device such as a rectifier is located by a member the upper face of which comprises a number of steps at different levels, the highest step being just above the highest mercury level. The member may consist of concentric tubes 3, Fig. 1, provided with slots, or of sheet-metal conical funnels 15, Fig. 3, mounted on a common stem. In a modification, the member is mounted upon a magnetic body the height of which is adjusted by means of an external magnet, preferably in dependence upon the load.
